All Clear; Shelter in Place at Gateway Lifted; No Threat to Campus

On April 16, 2026, the San Diego State University Police Department responded to a reported potential threat near SDSU’s Gateway Center after someone was mistaken for carrying a weapon. Out of caution, a shelter-in-place order was issued and the area was secured. Officers quickly determined there was no weapon and no actual threat. The individual was a facilities worker using professional equipment that had been misidentified. The shelter order was lifted and campus activity returned to normal.
Support resources, including counseling services, are available for students, faculty and staff should they need.
10:47 a.m.: SDSU Alert: Police have confirmed that a facilities workers was using professional equipment that was mistaken for a weapon. There is no weapon, and there is no active threat to campus. The shelter in place order at Gateway Center has been lifted. Police remain on site to notify building occupants that there is no threat and normal operations and activities are to resume. 10:32 a.m.: SDSU Alert: Police are in the area of Gateway Center near Campanile Drive and Hardy Avenue. Those in Gateway should shelter in place. All others should avoid the area. Police are searching for a suspect related to an ongoing investigation. Police are evaluating other campus impacts. Updates will be shared.
